Questions & Answers About College Admissions

Denise Kupetz • Oct 23, 2019

We interviewed Kim Medina, Executive Director of Admissions for the Colorado School of Mines. Kim has over 25 years of experience in college admissions at public and private institutions.  Her insights and knowledge have been a great help to those of us at College Route Map since long before College Route Map was incorporated. That’s because the three of us worked together for several years and our friendship continues today. In this video interview Kim provides answers to several questions that we often get from parents…and she tells us what makes the Colorado School of Mines special!

  1. What is it about Mines that makes it a great place for learning? What type of student is successful here?
  2. What are two or three key tips for parents to consider when helping their child search for a college that would be a great fit for them?
  3. How can a family make the most of a college visit?
  4. What’s an example(s) of what a potential student should do and should NOT do to try when applying for college?
  5. What are important steps for students/families to consider when going through the college search and subsequently, the application process?
  6. You’ve spoken and worked with a lot of students and their families over the years. What about your job keeps you coming back to work each day?

What is the right amount of parental involvement? “My son screwed up on his housing and he’s in a complete panic he’ll have to live in the freshman dorms” said the Mom in August, just as he was to begin his sophomore year in college (Fall housing selection took place the previous March).
